This thesis attempts to explore group-based instruction in physical education (henceforth called PE) empirically and theoretically in order to deal with the following issues: how to orient PE to each student, how to cater to individual needs of students. In group-based instruction in PE, first, students choose sports suitable for their interests, then those who choose the same sport are further grouped based on their PE knowledge, physical strength and sport skills before they are instructed individually. Literature review, class observation, questionnaire, experimentation, and statistic analysis are employed in the research to demonstrate the group-based instruction procedure and its effect. The research indicates that group-based instruction can adapt well to individual needs, positively motivate students and further foster students' life-long sport awareness. Further studies are needed to address these problems—shortage of teachers and difficultly in controlling and organizing class.
