Drawing on extensive fieldwork conducted from 2000 to 2006 in southern Sichuan, this pathbreaking study examines the function of modern school education among local ethnic communities. The case study focuses on two primary schools in Liangshan, in mountain areas where the Nuosu (classified as a group of Yi) inhabits. It argues why even within the same regional social system and culture environment, the two schools achieve differently.The heart of the thesis consists of detailed case studies of two Nuosu village communities and their primary schools. It outlines the local schools and their culture background by fieldwork and research narratives. This lively description and compare of the two schools results in four reasons what influence the attitude of the local villagers toward school education. They are what the villagers counts on the school education, how much they can pay, how is the attitude of the leaders in their communities and how is the qualities of teaching schools offer to the students.These are followed by a synthesis that compares different configurations of ethnic schools in different communities.
