The relationship between language and culture has constantly been a hot topic for linguists home and abroad. There is no doubt that culture teaching should be a part of language teaching, while the key is that how to do culture teaching in FIX The target of study in this paper is senior high school English teaching. The period of Fundamental Education is crucial in one's life, thus English learning is more important in this stage. First, the paper takes the documentation method to review the achievements on culture teaching home and abroad. Then through the method of classroom observation, interviewing teachers and students, the paper helps to reveal the present situation of building the students' cultural awareness and then it analyzes and generalizes the factors affecting cultural awareness building in senior high school. At last some relevant implications are concluded, which aims at providing some guidance for English culture teaching in senior high school.This paper consists of six parts:The first part is the introduction part. It provides the background for choosing the topic, the research questions and the mainly used methods of study.The second part mainly refers back to related achievements on culture teaching home and abroad.Part Three helps us have a general understanding on cultural awareness. First it defines culture. Then it defines cultural awareness in English teaching and presents the demands on enhancing the students' cultural awareness according to the 2003 English Curriculum Standards.Part Four is the core of this paper. This chapter mainly studies the present situation of cultural teaching in senior high school and analyzes the factors that influence cultural teaching: teacher belief and social views on education, teachers' cultural awareness, the textbook, test.The fifth part makes a reflection on the current situation and generalizes some implications which give some possible suggestions to schools, teachers, textbook composers and test question setters. This part also proposes that culture awareness can be enhanced through conscious learning and unconscious learning and conscious learning is more important at the implication of Byram's and Krashen's theory. It emphasizes the significance of quality and quantity in the building of cultural awareness.In the conclusion part the author reflects the advantages and disadvantages of this paper, and proposes new questions for further research.
