| According to goals set by Syllabus to senior middle school students (å¼ , 2003:2), English teaching must raise the students 'level of reading comprehension and enable them to read fast with great interest, reading is emphasized in the whole teaching process.In the college entrance examination, reading comprehension as an important skill is mainly tested, in which it covers 46%. And multiple choice, closet tests, reading comprehension, mistakes correction all require the ability of reading. Students lose lots of marks when their reading comprehension is limited.In discourse analysis, the reader and the writer may share the same language system and the same organization of discourse and the reader can approximately get the writer's writing intentions. According to this theory, teachers can treat a text as a whole while giving lessons. Introducing the world knowledge is necessary. And the title of a text or the first sentence of the text may give the hint of the topic or the writer's main writing purpose. Still context will help to get information correctly, guess the unknown words or make reasonable inference. Further more, cohesion can tell the relationship of each sentence and the arrangement of a text. It is especially useful in guiding the students to comprehend a text like cloze test.This paper consists of four parts. Part One focuses on the significance of reading teaching in high school and analyzes the students reading problems and the teachers teaching problems existing in high school. Chapter One discusses some of the discourse theory and their relationship with reading comprehension. Chapter Two shows how to apply these theories to instruct reading comprehension in high school. Chapter Tree shows the result of using these theories. Such a thesis should help those engaged in the teaching of reading in high schools in China. But some more factors we haven't considered also affect reading, so we need to make further research when possible. |
