Action research is a form of self-reflective enquiry undertaken by participants in social (including educational) situations in order to improve the rationality and justice of (a) their own social or educational practices, (b) their understanding of these practices, and (c) the situations (and institutions) in which these practices are carried out (Kemmis & Taggart, 1982).The present study starts with a practical problem, which is one of the problems I have in my teaching practice and has troubled me for some time. I want to solve the problems through the action research so that I can apply my knowledge and theory into practice, and promote my professional development at the same time. The present study presents a detailed report of an action research implemented to solve the problem that most of my students do not read efficiently. It concerns itself with an action research of Strategies-based Instruction (SBI) on reading in senior Grade 2. Different from previous research, this action research wants to emphasize the importance of SBI in language teaching and learning. It is hypothesized that if the students acquire some useful reading strategies by SBI, then they will able to read more efficiently. The result obtained from the action research implementation showed that my hypothesis has been proved to be correct. The thesis consists of 5 parts:In Part One, the purpose and significance of the present study were expressed.Part Two is concerned with literature, involving the key theorists in action research, strategy training at home and abroad, and the perspectives on the reading process.Part Three is about rationale for the research. The study is based on the theories of SBI, CALLA Lesson Plan Model and the methodology of action research.Part Four presents a detailed report of the present study. It reports an action research on reading by SBI of senior two students in No. 27 Middle School of Lanzhou. 63 students (including 28 girls and 35 boys) participated the research, which lasted 12weeks, The report includes problem identification, problem analysis, project hypothesis, a problem-solving which was revised during the project implementation, the methods of data collection which were questionnaires, interviews, teacher logs and so on. The last is the project evaluation.Part Five drew a conclusion to the significance of the present study in EFL teaching and learning, and pointed out it implications and limitations.
