In recent years,teacher education has changed its focus from a concern on what to teach and how to teach in terms of contents and methodology to teachers' professional development.As a newly-born educational theory and practice,reflective teaching has played an important role in the field of teacher education.According to the theory of reflective teaching,the process of foreign language teaching should be a process of self-reflcction,self-understanding,self-perfection and self-improvement made by a teacher.Reflective teaching can enable teachers to develop cognitive power,improve teaching methods and better teaching effects.lt contributes greatly to enhancing teachers' competence and qualification.In this thesis,thc researcher is concerned about the following issuses:What is reflective teaching?How to reflect and what to reflect?How well is reflective teaching known among the middle-school English teachers in China?What arc the difficulties that teachers will meet with in using reflective teaching?Chapter 1 provides an introduction to the definition of reflective teaching.Chapter 2 provides an introduction to classroom investigation procedures,in other words.the main approaches that teachers adopt in using reflective teaching.including teaching jouranls,lesson reports.surveys and questionnaires.audio and video recording.observation,and action research.Chapters 3-5 discuss the aspects of reflection in classroom teaching:the reflection on learners'bclicfs,on teacher decision making and on the role of the tcacher.Chapter 6 is the most important part of the thesis.This part reports the views of 30 English teachers on reflective teaching.Using multimcthod,qualitative research procedurcs,the researcher discovered that many middle-school English teachers didn't know much about the theory of reflective teaching.and that teachers usually met with a lot of difficulties when they were adopting reflective tcaching.The results suggest that,in order to improve their teaching level.English teachers should adopt reflective teaching in their teaching practice to pursue professional development.
