The School-Based Teacher Education(SBTE) is thriving in many parts of the world. In China, the on-going state-led campaign aiming to modernize its primary education system and curriculum calls for upgraded skills for teachers. With its unique theory and applications, the low-cost and efficient operation and ability to facilitate the sustainable development for teachers, SBTE is increasingly used as one of major training models for teacher trainees.In recent years, the continued education for Chinese secondary school teachers have made a stride. The Chinese Law on Education identifies the objective of deploying and improving life-long education system. The Guideline for the Continued Education for Primary and Secondary School Teachers In the 10th Five-Year Plan Period calls for stepping up effort to provide more school-based education for teachers. In the letter and spirit of the Guideline, all districts and counties in Beijing are striving to enhance SBTE through increased research and experiments.This paper starts with elaborating on the significance of SBTE and reviews the progress made on the worldwide research of the field and identifies the characteristics and shortcomings of SBTE in China. In the second part of the paper, the author uses sample surveys and interviews to help reader learn more of the status quo the SBTE for geography teachers in Beijing's secondary schools and to find out its shortcomings and potential. Finally, the author offers a list of recommendations and feasible options for improving SBTE for secondary school geography teachers in Beijing. The paper aims to facilitate the professional development of geography teachers and improvement of SBTE in the city's secondary schools.
