Sound personality is the foundation for the growth and success of an adolescent. As the important constituent of quality education, art teaching in junior high school has some unique advantages in the training of cognition, emotion, abilities, individuality and other qualities. Art teaching plays an important role in the training of sound personality.In this paper, the methods of literature research, logical analysis, questionnaire, case analysis, field survey and others are utilized. The study sorted out the relevant theoretical foundation of art teaching and personality development in junior high school, defined related concepts, analyzed and discussed personality characteristics of junior high school students, influence factors, art teaching characteristics, advantages and approach to cultivating the sound personality. On the basis of theoretical analysis, the researcher sited visit and research, found out the practical problems of art teaching to play a role in the sound personality development in junior high school, and put forward some corresponding solutions for reference.Junior high school students' personality development is in the rapid and not stable stage. Junior high school students' personalities show a lot of antinomies, under the influence of level of physical and psychological development, the heavy academic pressures, the complex social environment and other factors. Their self-awareness is high but the subjective paranoia, emotional experience is rich but lack of self-control. They have courage to create and reform but lack of scientific literacy, advocate self-esteem and freedom but are rebellious. Art teaching in junior high school has characteristics of intuitional and visual, affective, practical and operational, emphasizing aesthetic education and diversification of evaluation criteria. Through art appreciation and art creation, art teaching can develop cognitive ability, the ability to control emotions, and to distinguish truth, goodness, beauty and the opposite. It can train students' spirit of innovation and creativity, help students build self-esteem and self-confidence, shape sound personality. The article believes that art teaching plays an important role in personality development of junior high school students, and they are related closely. Art teaching must aimed at playing the function and effect on training sound personality in junior high school. But in the current, art teaching can't play the role of training sound personality perfectly yet, because of subjective and objective constraints. Therefore, in promoting the process of implementation of quality education, people should continue to enhance the awareness of cultivating students' sound personality, pay attention to the status and role of art teaching, improve the quality of art teachers, reform the concept of education and system, optimize the strategies and methods of art teaching and character education, to develop into person with healthful physique and psychology by various channels and fields.
