| English language skills involve listening, speaking, reading and writing. Among all these four language skills, reading, which inputs the foreign language in the form of passages, plays an essential role in English teaching of senior high school. It is one of the most important ways for students to understand the language and catch the imformation carried by the language. It can help students to broaden their horizons, cultivate the sense of language, increase their vocabulary, improve writing skills and come to understand the cultures and society of western countries. And because of the limit of time during the English class, reading after class seems to be much more necessary during the English learning. With the rapid development of Internet in recent years, both sources and medium of the English reading after class have changed a lot. Therefore the main topic of this thesis is senior high school students' English reading after class with teachers' supervison. I interviewed and gave questionnaires to teachers and students of three schools in Shanghai so as to get the general idea of the current situation of English reading after class in Shanghai, major obstacles students meet during their reading and methods teachers take to deal with these obstacles, to try to explore the factors influence the effect of English reading after class, and finally to find out a better way to do the English reading after class. The first chapter introduces the significance and purpose, contents and methods of English reading after class, and identifies key words such as "English reading after class". The thesis aims to get the general idea of the current situation of English reading after class through interviewing and giving questionnaires to teachers and students so as to help teachers guide their students how to read English materials after school in a much effective way.The second chapter concludes recent relative researches and their conclusions.The third chapter is about the detailed research processes, including the object of expriment, the content of the experiment and the design and implement of the interview.The fourth chapter analyzes the data of the expreiment. It involves students'attitude towards English reading after class, the way students take to choose their reading materials, the purpose of their reading, the methods and strategies they use during their reading, the amount of their reading, the obstacles they meet during their reading and the way their teachers guide them during the reading.The fifth chapter concludes the current situation of English reading after class and gives some suggestions according to the situation. |
