Situational teaching is a methodology, which is based on the teaching content, cognitive characteristics of students and their need for interest, provides students situations with vivid English learning environments and melts teaching objectives in the problem solving process. It is straighter, more scientific and interesting. And it can increase students' interest in learning English, change their attitude toward English, inspire them to learn actively, enhance their self-awareness and improve their ability of using English in practice. In other words, student can not only learn, but also enjoy learning, which is of significance for the development of quality-oriented education.Beginning with the definition and researching background of situational teaching to find out relevant theoretical support, the thesis makes a more detailed statement about the research status of situational teaching at home and abroad, pointing out the necessity of the research, and then find out some principles required in the creation of effective teaching situations. In order to prove the validity and practicability of the approach, the writer put emphasis on the feasibility measures to create effective teaching situations. In addition, one of the writer's teaching cases has been included, trying to show readers how to effectively teach English for junior high school students by means of effective situations creating in the class. What's more, to prove this method is feasible and impactful, the writer made a one-term-experiment with supports of relevant teaching practice, literature review, comparison study and questionnaire. The results of the experiment show that situational teaching is more effective than traditional methods in improving students' learning ability and attitude toward English learning. Meanwhile, after analyzing the results of the experiment, the writer reflects on it, hoping these reflections will provide valuable guidance and reference for the teachers who want to improve English teaching and those who will do the related research.This thesis includes five chapters. Chapter One is introduction, which includes the researching back ground and the purpose and significance of the study; Chapter Two is literature review, which introduces the related definitions, features, theoretical basis of situational teaching, the development of the researches on situational teaching at home and abroad, the principles and measures of creating effective situation for English teaching. Chapter Three is research methodology, the research questions and hypothesis, methods, design of experiment and procedures are exclaimed clearly in this chapter. Chapter Four is date analysis and the results of the experiment. In this chapter all the data is analyzed by SPSS 17.0. The results show that situational teaching is more effective and successful than traditional teaching in the junior English teaching. Chapter Five is the conclusion part. Major findings, implications, limitations and some useful suggestions for the further research are presented respectively.
