The thought on school physical education is kind of opinions or ideas, formed about school physical education directly or indirectly in the practice of physical education in schools in a certain period. It is a cognition of the essential characteristics of school physical education. It is embodied in a diversity of forms, not only in guiding thought for school physical education formulated by conerned authorities, in individual or people's ideas or outlook on physical education, but also in theories arrived at after systematic study of school physical education. With the research methods of exhausting reference materials, logical analysis, comparative analysis, etc., with as its object of study the evolution and development of the thought on school physical education in the sixty years after the founding the People's Republic of China, this paper makes an attempt to sum up the experiences of the sixty years of school physical education since the founding the P.R.C., pinpointing the core values of the thought on school physical education in different historical periods. Meanwhile, the paper also tries to explain the metamorphosis of the thought on shool physical education in the sixty years since the founding of the P.R.C. from the perspective of ideology, with a view to propose a theory backing for deepening the reform of our school physical education.This paper puts forward the view that the development or evolution of the thought on school physical education in the sixty years of the P.R.C. went through five stages, namely, initial years after the founding ot the P.R.C., socialist construction period, the Culture Revolution period, the period after adopting the reform and opening up policy, socialism market economy period. By studying all these periods, althouth it seems that there appeared an appearance of one kind of schools'thought occupying a dominant position or a few kinds of schools'thought coexisting together, the essence still embodies the logical development of from"physical education as an implement"to"biological physical education", and to"humanism physical education". This paper points out the different core values of the thoughts on school physical education in different periods, exposes the various subjective and objective factors which exerted an influence on the thoughts, and analyses how the thoughts exerted an influence on the practice, arriving at the conclusion that the core values of the thought on school physical education is the most important factor that guides and directs the development of school physical education. The paper expresses the view that the sixty years experience and development of school physical education shows us the gradual perfection of the thought on school physical education, which is embodied in the ideological transformation of from"stressing skills"to"stressing qualities", from"stressing competition"to"stressing improving health", and from"stressing physical being"to"stressing the whole being". Finally, this paper wishes to point out that only when the reform of the thought on school physical education is led and guided by humanism can"from theory to practice"truly embody the historic responsibilities and contemporary values of the thought on school physical education.
