As a high-quality social group, the university student is an important force in China's socialist cause, and the community has a very important role in promoting development. With the continuous economic development, economic globalization is constantly strengthened, while significant changes occurred in society. With the social development physical and mental development of student has emerged so many new features that the ideological and political education faces new challenges and requirements.This paper attempts to use the basic viewpoints of need theory to combine need theory with ideological and political education, so that the university student ideological and political education can promote better. The article begins with the concept and features of need, and come to a conclusion by the introduction of three representative theories on need. I proposed approaches and methods combined with need theory to improve f college student ideological and political education by analyzing the basic characteristics of current university student.This paper is divided into four parts:The first part is mainly about the general meaning of need theory. Firstly, it starts with different disciplines for need concept, and come to a conclusion that need is the reflection on the conditions what the existence, continuation and development of human life dependent on and the corresponding social life .Also it's the reflection on a imbalance of the internal organisms and surroundings. Then the paper analyzes the general characteristics of need: objectivity, sociality and historicity, driven, periodicity. On this basis, it sums up and analyzes the need theory of Maslow, Iderfer and Marx , then come to a conclusion about the correct attitude towards needs of university student.The second part analyzes the meeting points between need theory and the ideological and political education of university student. First, the need theory is one of the theoretical foundations for university student ideological and political education. Need is the psychological process of human, so need theory analyzes and summarized the process. If the ideological and political education of university student is effective, we must use the need theory to understand the needs of students. At the same time, university student ideological and political education uses and develops the need theory. Need theory is the main content in psychology, philosophy and other subjects, and ideological and political education of university student is a comprehensive application of many subjects. Therefore, the university student ideological and political education can not only use need theory, but also continue to enrich and develop it constantly.The third part mainly analyzes the general features and reasons of university student current needs. Current society is in an important period of reform, and the Economic globalization is strengthening constantly, meanwhile, the network has become a important platform for university student's activity, in addition, students is in period of transition from the semi-mature to mature. Therefore, students need has features such as hierarchy, diversity and polytrope.The forth part bring up approaches to achieve students ideological and political education for the basic characteristics of the current college students needs. First, we should treat students'needs correctly and adheres to the philosophy of people-oriented, so that we can carry out ideological and political education. Second, we should carry out ideological and political education for different level of need. Third, we should carry out ideological and political education across-the-board to direct at need diversity. Forty, we should carry out ideological and political education by seizing the development of need.
