Abstract/Summary:
Vocabulary teaching is a basic but very important part in the English teaching. Therefore, for the English learners, a comparatively better way of advancing their English is to enrich their vocabulary. With the progress of new course reform of high school teaching, senior school students are requested to grasp a lot more English words according to the New Criterion for English Course. Teachers have been making much efforts to find a way with high efficiency to help students not only fully understand the knowledge of the words but use them freely in different contexts. Meanwhile, teachers all expect they can satisfy the needs of their students and themselves, but with the restriction of the teaching time, students actually make not so much progress on the grasp of the knowledge of the words and the retention of these words. So it's important to raise the learning efficiency and the retention for the learned words of the students.Enlarging vocabulary through reading is a good learning method that has proved to be true. Learners can acquire the reading materials through the internet, newspapers and periodicals and magazines. The materials should be interesting to them of course. Teachers should ensure their students have learned a certain quantity of words after learning for a period of time and at the same time they should tell them about the reading skills. This thesis, which discuss about how natural reading has an effect on the Incidental Vocabulary Acquisition, includes four parts. Natural reading is aimed at reading for the meaning of the materials, which can help students pay special attention to the key words, and this can help them to raise their awareness of guessing the meaning of the words positively. Therefore, the author tried to prove whether natural reading can be helpful on the Incidental Vocabulary Acquisition. After half a year's research, the author found that compared to the traditional reading, natural reading can better promote Incidental Vocabulary Acquisition. As an English teacher, how to improve the vocabulary teaching strategy and as senior high school students, as well as other English learners, how to enlarge their English vocabulary and how to use them, all the factors are the concerns for all of us. At last, it refers to the limitations of this research and some suggestions for future research. The writer also realized the short points about the research and its result. In a word, further exploration about this subject is important.
