The Transformation Of The Kuomintang Party During Lee Teng-hui's Time

The study of the transformation of a political party is one of the important studies in the field of Politics. With the thorough study of politics in Taiwan, the political parties in Taiwan inevitably become an important object of study. Lien Chan, KMT Honorary Chairman of Taiwan, had an ice-breaking trip to the mainland in 2005. Ma Ying-jeou was elected president of Taiwan in 2008, when the century-old party, Kuomintang became the ruling party once again. These have caused widespread concern among scholars at home and abroad. Therefore, it is much more meaningful to study the transformation of Taiwan's largest and oldest political party, especially to study the Kuomintang's painful transformation during Lee Teng-hui's time.During Lee Teng-hui's time, there were intense struggles among different parties within the Kuomintang. Despite the Kuomintang's slow localization, the Kuomintang ultimately lost its ruling position, becoming the largest opposition party in Taiwan. The study of the transformation of the Kuomintang helps to identify the Kuomintang in Taiwan and the direction of its development. Besides, it means much to the implementation of "one country two systems and peaceful reunification" and the early settlement of the Taiwan issue. By analyzing the transformation of the Kuomintang during Lee Teng-hui's time, the paper reveals that the Kuomintang remains in the transformation period and constantly pushes forward the process of localization and democratization, and that the Kuomintang will take long to complete the final transformation period.This paper, supported by the theory of political parties, tries to discuss the Kuomintang's transformation during Lee Teng-hui's time. It consists of five parts. The first part is an introduction. First, it involves the background and the significance of the topic of the transformation of the Kuomintang Party during Lee Teng-hui's Time. Then, it reviews the current domestic and foreign literature on the Kuomintang Party. Finally, it is the thread of writing this article. The second part introduces the concepts of political parties, party politics and the transformation of political parties, and explains their content. The third part specifically analyzes the background of the Kuomintang's transformation from social, economic and other aspects. The fourth part is the main body of the paper. It deals with the process of the Kuomintang's transformation from three aspects, that is, the localization of the power structure, the democratization of the power operation and the independence of Taiwan of the ideological line. And then is the effectiveness of the Kuomintang's transformation. The fifth part is conclusion, which summarizes the article, evaluates the transformation of the Kuomintang and raises the issue to be studied further.
