Overseas Chinese In Fiji And The Cultural Communication Between China And Fiji

Overseas Chinese is a kind of important medium of the interaction between modern China and the world. Although Fiji is a small country of South Pacific Ocean, just formally has diplomatic relation with China in 1975, Chinese immigrants of Fiji have struggled with painstaking efforts for 150 years. The pioneers of Chinese immigrants once have engaged in the heaviest and the hardest labor and also have suffered from racial discrimination and maltreatment of the employers. What's the worse, a few people died abroad because of hard work and disease during the past over one century. But the Chinese immigrants have paid a price of blood, sweat, strength and intelligence for the development of economy, culture and social prosperity of the emigration ground .Thus the Chinese immigrants become one of the glorious wasteland -- pioneers and win respect from Fijians. This is the pride of Chinese nation. It is very important to strengthen the contact between Chinese and overseas Chinese and also develop friendship of people between China and Fiji on the basis of research about the background of Chinese people's immigration to Fiji, about appearance of life in lodging country and the conflict with mainstreaming society and also about Chinese people's contribution to lodging country and motherland.This paper has investigated historical cause of Chinese people's immigration to Fiji, the formation and development of society of Fiji Chinese, the process of adaptation and social assimilation with mainstreaming society .and also have concluded the historical contribution to the development of social economy and promotion to the friendship between China and Fiji.
