Since the reform and opening-up policy, China's society has witnessed, along with the advancing tide of a comprehensive reform, the changing trend of its benefit and community structure towards multi-dimensional and complex. Political social group (PSG), in this context, reflects directly the change of this kind. When ready to embrace the spring of its development, PSG is also going to take more initiatives and more important roles in the construction of a socialist harmonious society. Therefore, in the strategic direction of a socialist harmonious society, research on the situation and development of PSG is of great significance, contributing not only to the solution of social problems, but also to harmonious politics, economy and social undertaking.Against a macroscopic background of the transformation in China's politics, economy and society, the thesis set forth its elaboration with both a scientific theory and real practice. It takes the dialectical materialism and historical materialism as its instruction and combines the method of logic analysis and experience analysis. Description and explanation to PSG's actual situation and research on both PSG's current situation and approaches of their development are carried on.The thesis has a research framework and main content as below. The First Chapter gives the definition of a PSG, namely a social group in some specific countries, whose members gather with certain specific benefit, with a view to realizing and maintaining their benefit so as to affect the government or policy-making. On this basis, the thesis further analyzes the characteristics and function of a PSG, laying the foundation for further research. The Second Chapter is the key part. It analyzes the contemporary developing situation of PSG in China from different perspectives including background, type, characteristics, existing problems and reason. Result has been drawn that with regard to the spring up of PSGs, the economical development, the benefit differentiation and the formation of special benefit communities are economic premise and social basis; the party and government's support is an important condition; the maturation of consciousness for common interest of different communities is intrinsic basis. As a consequence of the economic, political and cultural conditions of China, the development of PSG is presenting the following characteristics: their emergence and development are propelled not only by the government but also by folk needs; PSGs have diversified relations with the government and there is an obvious tendency of networking among PSGs. Although PSGs have obtained considerable advancement since China's reform and opening-up policy, problems are not to be neglected. The development of different PSGs is not balanced; PSG is not fully mature as it is obviously transitional and is not representational; the function of PSG is abnormal. The reasons for these problems can be various. For instance, juvenility of PSG itself, not-so-well coordination of PSGs with the party and the country, lack of a complete law & regulation for its activities, its dual management system, etc. The Third Chapter respond the strategic goal of building a socialist harmonious society, and brings forward the idea of a new path for the healthy and orderly development of PSG including enhancement of system construction, perfection of present system, cultivation of a civil society, all of which indicate the direction for PSGs now in China. The basic conclusion of the thesis is summed up as follows. The development of PSG is the requirement of the social structure reforming, and is also a feature of the strategic goal of building a socialist harmonious society. In this direction, the healthy and orderly development of PSG should profit not only from the western experience of policy-making for regulating different interest groups, but also from the speeding up of developing a civil society in China, so as to make the function of PSG to a full display.
