The relationship between Britain and Europe are important issues in the British postwar political life. Along with the gradually deepening of Europe integration, the interdependence between Britain and Europe, British economy and politics can not separate from the development of Europe. But the European policy which was adopted by the Major's conservative government, not only caused Britain isolate Europe but also had initiated the serious domestic political crisis.Under the stern international and domestic situation, The Blair government, in charge from 1997, proposes the slogan of "merging in Europe, and leading Europe", tries hard to improve the relations with the other states in European Union, reshapes the Britain's image, positively cooperates with the other partners, impels the unity, democracy, peace, efficiency of the European Union, promotes the competition of the European Union, constructs the military force of the European Union. But there are dual characters on each item of the Blair government's European policy: advancing the reform of the European Union but not to give up the right of the British independence, supporting the European common market but not to be willing to withstand the excessive burden, initiating European common defense but not to discard the Atlantic relations. These cause the Blair government's policy on European Union present four prominent characters including the practicality of the goal, the flexibility of the method, the continuity of the policy, and the balance of the stagy.Certainly, the Blair government's policy on European Union has already improved a lot compared with the pre-conservative party government .But now the state still is the unit of the international society .The national interest still is the starting point and the foot spot of the Britain's foreign policy. As the member-states community, European Union cannot cover the individual state's complete benefits. Moreover, the Britain's wish of leading the Europe exists in contradiction and difference with France and Germany which are great states in European Union. Each state takes European Union as an effective way to strive for and expand its own interest. Revolving with the assignment of the power and economic interest, every state launches intensive capture. Britain is not the exceptional. The Blair government's policy on European Union has influence not only on Britain but also on the process of the European integration. Simultaneously;the policy will encounter many challenges from various aspects. The Britain's policy on European Union in the future will pace back and forth persisting in the national interest.
