This thesis researches the legal issues on the system of civil liability of ship managers, and based on the basic theories of law and combining with shipping and judicial practice makes conclusions and suggestions for the establishment of the system of civil liability of ship managers. There are seven chapters in this thesis. With the introduction of the development of shipping industry and the confusion of ship management industry without any civil legislation, it is concluded that (a) ship manager is a shipping auxiliary company entrusted by the ship owner, bareboat charterer or ship operator offering the services including ship's engineering, safety, equipment manning, maintenance and others ensuring the normal running of the ship; (b) the management scope of ship managers mostly involves ship management, crew management and ship commercial management etc.; (c) the legal status of ship managers is complicated: for its trustor, it is the assignee in an entrustment contract; for third parties related to the entrustment contract, it is the agent for its trustor or independent party; (d) the principles for establishing the system of civil liability of ship managers are the ones of abidance by science, following the industry development and unification of legal system; (e) it is put forward that the system of civil liability of ship managers shall include basic liability principle, period of responsibility, civil liability in management activities and limitation of liability etc.; (f) the civil liability insurance and guarantee shall be established by means of maintaining liability insurance and deposit.
