When the economic role of a nation or a region is being measured, the influence of its large enterprise groups to the world economy, as well as its GDP, must be taken into account. At the end of 2003, the GDP of Hebei Province has reached $7905.86billion, taking the 5th place in the nation. To transform its economy from one of highquantity to one of high quality, the province must go further to foster a batch of large enterprise groups with international competitiveness by promoting the reform and development of enterprise groups. These enterprise groups must have distinct advantage in their central business, be outstanding in essentially competitive capacity and have their own intellectual property rights.This paper has two main objectives. The first is to analyze the current situation and the existing problems in the development of enterprise groups in Hebei province, and to measure the gap between these enterprise groups and their foreign counterparts through comparative research. The second is to find solutions and suggestions for Hebei province to promote international competitiveness of enterprise groups by examining the experience that can be learned from Korea.The paper begins by analyses based on a large quantity of first-hand data, describing the current status, the characteristics and the role in national economy of Hebei's enterprise groups, and focusing on their potential of development. Also, the paper points out the weakness of Hebei's enterprise groups, analyses the existing problems in their development and explores the root of the problems.Then, by taking the corporations of Samsung, SK, Daewoo and Hanbo as examples, the paper do research on the experience worth to be learned and the lessons worth to be drawn from the history of growth and death of some Korean enterprise groups.Finally, the paper put forward solutions and suggestions on development of Hebei's enterprise groups and on the promotion of their international competitiveness, considering the experience and lessons from Korea together with the economic situation of Hebei province. |
