Family business has already spread all over the world as a kind of general enterprise type, and its role in economic development of the world is the topic which business circles and academia pay attention to extensively. Chinese family business, which accounts for 90% of the enterprises run by the local people of our country, has got swift and violent development and been strengthened constantly since reform and opening-up, becoming the point of growth of economic development of our country. However, in the course of developing, many hindering factors have appeared in family business, and it encounters the bottleneck states of the evolution. How to make family business extricate oneself from a plight and realize sustainable development becoming the key and central question that family business survives and develops, it is also a difficult problem with which economists and entrepreneurs confront. Studying the sustainable development of family business has important theoretical and realistic meaning.To the definitions of family business and its sustainable development, there is no final conclusion in the academia. On the basis of absorbing the domestic and foreign research results about family business, the paper defines the two and points out the sustainable development of family business is a dynamic evolution which requires enterprises to develop today and enterprise's today's development not to bring the obstacles to tomorrow's as well. By applying the altruism, theory of the transaction cost and key ability theory and involving in such disciplines as economics, management, sociology, science of culture, etc., from multi-viewpoints, interdisciplinary to analyze and research family business, the paper has proposed the basic route of sustainable development of family business.Family business is the organizational form of a kind of endogenous enterprises in our country's specific macroscopical environment, altruism and property right system arrangement that exists within it saving the transaction cost effectively, it is a primary condition of its sustainable development. Meanwhile, identity management instead of agreement management, financing risk costly and generally lack of key ability that exists inside family business, it is the inferiority of sustainable development. Through an analysis of superiority and inferiority of family business, while absorbing the domestic and international outstanding family business's developing experience, thepaper proposes family business should realize sustainable development, and enterprise itself is the developing subject. According to the requests of market, family business should carry on system innovation, train its key ability, set up preventive defence and respondence system, break its bottleneck states, and realize sustainable development.
