HSBC is one of the largest bank & financial service groups in the world. Since 1850s, HSBC gradually developed to an international well-known bank & financial service group from a regional bank through continuous merger and acquisition (M&A). M&A strategy is the most important and the most characteristic part of HSBC general strategy. The history of HSBC development is also a history of M&A.This paper consists of three parts. The first part introduces the history of HSBC M&A, describes the most important three M&A cases of HSBC: Hangseng bank acquisition to obtain foothold in Asia, Midland bank acquisition to land at Europe, and U.S. household international bank acquisition to expand in America. The second part summarizes the characters of HSBC M&A including global development in balance, scrutinizing target, and selecting the acting time. The third part puts forward the general M&A guidance Chinese commercial bank should adopt at present according to the hint of serial HSBC M&A cases.
