Ever since American scholars, C.K. Prahalad and British Scholar C. Hmael, published their paper entitled "the competence of the corporation"in 1990, and following their publication of the book: "Corporation strategy- the grand competence of the future", the research and investigation of the corporation's core competence (CCC) have been surging high. The theoretical system has become one of the most popular schools dealing with the strategy of corporation developments.Currently, the theory of the CCC has become the important tools analyzing effective competition and growth among corporations. CCC is becoming the vital goal of corporations. Establishment and development of the strategic CCC in a company is the general strategic pursuant, as well as the essence of its effectiveness. CCC is the source of a company to stay persistently competent over its rivalry. It will ignite the potential of the company to enter new market, provide greater visibility to consumers; therefore, CCC is the comprehensive power of the corporation, possessing uniqueness that defies imitation or reproduction by its competitors.The rise and fall of the retail business also depends coincidently upon the CCC of the retail company.Retail business has prolonged history in Guangdong province. Since the adaptation of the opening-up policy, Guangdong retail business advanced quickly. In 2001, the commodities retail volume in Guangdong exceeded the summation of Beijing and Shanghai, ranked number one and came to 12.3% of the national sales volume.However, individual retail corporations did not run as competent, compared with giant retailers in other regions. In 2001-2003, there was no retailer in Guangdong entering into 'the National Top Ten' list of retailers and chain stores. In 2002, theprovincial large and media sized retailers' sale volume amounted 363.85 billion Yuan ( RMB ) , with a growth rate of only 12.5%.Overall, the Guangdong retail corporations are characterized with labor-intensiveness, with low level of capital management, which demonstrated as market insensitiveness, low scale efficiency, mundane competitive measures, lack of high valued commodities, all of which demonstrated that the low level CCC of the Guangdong retail business. The CCC of the Guangdong retailers could not gain competitive advantage over the domestic contenders from other regions, but also be incompetent against the incoming foreign retailers.The dissociation of business from its technology is one of the most important causes for the low CCC of the Guangdong retailers. This is demonstrated by the low level application of bar-code system, less effective POS system, network construction not up-to-date, low level applications of electronic anti-thief systems and not paying due attention to database explorations. All of these restrict severely the CCC of the Guangdong retailer business. Under these circumstances, the future niche for the development and even survival of the Guangdong retail corporations depends greatly upon whether effective strategy is taken and CCC is boosted.Faced with immense competition from home and abroad, it is therefore an imminent task to investigate the technological expertise on how to enhance the CCC through the application of new technology in Guangdong retail business.By studying the status, experience and effectiveness of the successful retailers from home and abroad, and by studying the technology, competence and adaptability of the Guangdong retailer corporations, effective measures are expected to be established on raising the Guangdong retailer corporations' CCC systematically. Aiming atproviding theoretical and practical support for up-tuning Guangdong retail businesses.Theoretical studies are emphasized in this paper, while experience and effectiveness of new technology applications are analyzed to apply and enhance the Guangdong retailer CCC.
