On the basis of describing the main idea of Marxism-Leninism theory of the transitional period, the essay has investigated the theory's historical destiny in china. The essay ,up to more or less 35.000words.,consists of three parts. The first part gives a brief introduction of the calssical Marxists' thought of the transitional period. Judging by the historical condition and characteristics at that time, Marx and Engles had pionted out how proletariat nation would enter communism after they took power. However their genius assumptions were only based on some developed countries in western Europe and North America. Thus they didn't and couldn't make a more exhausted expounding on how the developing countries would transform to communism. Taking the Soviet Russia as an example, Lenin had creatively raised the theory about how the developing countries would develop into the socialist nation. Unfortunately, due to his early death, the important part of his theory, New Economic Policy, hadn't been fully practiced and systematically summarized. Stalin, based on his own interpretation of the Marxism-Leninism theory about the transitional period, referred that the developing countries could first enter the socialist nation, and then build itself into socialist nation. Meanwhile he also declared that the transitional period had finished in Russia. Stalin had experienced the whole transitional period of Soviet Union from capitalism to socialism, thus the Soviet Union model of socialism he had established had naturally been taken and followed by the communists in the other countries. The second part not only points out the important theoretical and practical effect of the theory of the transitional period upon China, but also stressed that the theory had guided China to the socialism soon after the Republic of China was founded and had made China achieve a great transition from new democraticsociety to socialism. But due to Chinese communists' misunderstanding of the theory, the theory had varied during the way of socialist construction in China which produced serious consequence on Chinese socialism, resulting in the serious and long-lasting radical development in economy and the enlargment of class struggle. We may say that the 30 years' development after the foundation of The Republic of China was closely connected with Chinese Communists' understanding of the theory of the transitional period. The last part is concerned with the author's own idea with regard to several controversial questions, such as .whether the socialist primary stage is the transitional period , whether the socialist transitional period is transient, and whether the socialist primary stage is beginning with the foundation of the Republic of China. At last the author will expect to deliberate these questions with professor Cheng Baoliang and professor Tang Chunliang, and will be appreciative to get help and derive inspiration from them.
