| It's pointed out by Professor Porter E. Michael that in any industry, whether it is domestic or international, the nature of competition is embodied in five competitive forces: (1) the threat of new entrants, (2) the threat of substitute products or services, (3) the bargaining power of suppliers, (4) the bargaining power of buyers, and (5) the rivalry among the existing competitors. The state of competition in the shipbuilding industry is a function of five basic competitive forces: rivalry among existing shipbuilders, threat of new entrants, threat of substitutes, bargaining power of shipowners, bargaining power of suppliers. Among them, rivalry among existing shipbuilders and bargaining power of shipowners affect the competition position of participants most strongly. The government plays an important role in shipbuilding industry by affecting each of the five forces in one way or another and therefore has a remarkable influence on the development of shipbuilding industry. The shipbuilding industry has always been global since the early nineteenth century when steam -powered iron and steel ships were introduced. In shipbuilding industry, most activities are geographically concentrated and regional marketing activities are highly coordinated from a global prospective. Industry leadership and the center of world shipbuilding industry kept shifting during the past 200 years, United States, UK, Japan and Korea emerged one by one as the world leading shipbuilding nation. Many facts in the history illustrate that competitiveness is the decisive factor to the ups and downs of a nation's shipbuilding industry. It is accepted as a general law that the leadership in shipbuilding industry is shifting from nations with high shipbuilding cost to nations with low shipbuilding cost.Being representative of traditional industries, shipbuilding industry has already changed from pure labor intensive industry to labor, technology and capital intensive industry as a result of the development of world economy and advancement of science and technology. With the establishment of People's Republic of China, especially during recent twenty years after China adopted the open policy, our shipbuilding industry has made substantial progress in improving the scale, technology level as well as quality of itself. China became the third shipbuilding nation in terms of shipbuilding output by actively competing in the world market while considering the domestic market as its standpoint.China shipbuilding industry today is facing challenges from the following aspects: diversified industry participants, low concentration and poor economies of scale of the industry; repetitive investment in expanding industry capacity at low level; regressive in the cost competitiveness; and slow in improving technology of the industry etc. The competitiveness of China shipbuilding industry is standing at the medium level in the world shipbuilding market. Its future development should be in accordance with following principles: important position occupied by shipbuilding industry in the national economy, improvement of competitiveness by innovation in shipbuilding technology and strategy of cultivating industry tycoons. In line with the theory of competitive advantage, the author seeks to analyze the shipbuilding industry and to elaborate the important status of shipbuilding industry in the national economy as well as the general law of the development of shipbuilding. Furthermore, the author carries out the assessment of the competitiveness of China shipbuilding industry and discusses issues on the development of China shipbuilding industry by comparing it with that of nations such as Japan, Korea and West European countries. The thesis consists of five parts:Part One Global Competition of Shipbuilding Industry, discussing the structure of the shipbuilding industry, analyzing the shipbuilding value chain, introducing the strategies employed by major shipbuilding firms and the structure of competition in the world shipbuilding market;Part T... |
