For its beautiful melody and distinctive characters, though failed the premiere, Bizet's opera Carmen remains the most popular and ranks the first in terms of number of performance amongst western operas. This thesis tries to interpret the essence of the opera in following:Firstly, the introduction of Merimee, author of the original novel and play and the background of the creation of the novel.Secondly, introduction and analysis of Bizet, the composer, from which the conclusion of his distinctive feature of composition is drawn:exotic, full of bold harmony combinations and colorful orchestration.Thirdly, a full analysis on the play and music of the opera Carmen, which emphasizes on the developing track of the characters'personalities from major arias; while at the same time, using the performing experience of masters of senior generations as reference and combing my own artistic practice to interpret and analyze the music and characters of the opera and present my own views.As the saying goes:knowledge knows no bounds.
