The development of the music in 20th century proved that the composers had already reached the peak of Romanticism in 19th century. Through the combination of melody and harmony, which came the first and second place respectively, Franz Schubert made the art song come to its peak for the first time, while Hugo Wolf, with the influence of his respectable teacher Richard Wagner, developed a new style which was called talkish melody, as the beginning of 20th century art songs. Throughout the evolution of songs, Wolf's art songs were a crucial to the transition from Romanticism to 20th century art songs. Albert Einstein once said, "Schubert stood at the beginning, while Wolf at the end. Schubert would never feel ashamed for this successor." In the vocal performing and teaching process, Wolf's works were always ignored. However, because of the higher requirements of the pause of phases, coherent of voice, and the accuracy of various varying tones, performers would always find there left lots of treasures to be found, technically and artisticly. Wolf's art songs have a definite distinctive meaning to both vocal performing and teaching.
