On C-e Translation Of Cultural Landscape Materials From The Perspective Of Functional Equivalence

With the development of Chinese tourism industry, her abundant natural and cultural landscapes have attracted more and more tourists at home and abroad. Natural beauty is intoxicating while cultural landscapes embodying cultural contents of human beings are even more fascinating. Actually the cultural landscape is the product of human history and culture, as well as the crystallization of modern civilization, and it is the window of mirroring ethnic culture and history, so the Chinese-English translation of the materials plays a significant role in promoting Chinese culture and introducing tourism resources to foreign visitors. As the cultural landscape materials contain rich historical and cultural connotations that foreign tourists are unfamiliar with, the translation about the materials should give priority to conveying information to achieve cultural exchange. Meanwhile, seeing that the readers from different cultures have different aesthetic psychology, the translator should try to use the forms of linguistic expressions which are familiar to the target readers in order to attain the effect of original readers.Eugene A. Nida thinks that translation means communicating and the content of information is of prime importance. He put forward the functional equivalence that focuses on the corresponding of information content between source text and target text rather than that between their linguistic forms, with expectation that the readers of the translated text should be able to understand and appreciate it in basically the same manner as the original readers did. This keeps with the translation of the cultural landscape materials. Therefore, the present thesis is devoted to the study of Nida's functional equivalence theory and applies it to guiding C-E translation of the cultural landscape materials, which proves the feasibility of the theory and its practical guidance role. Accordingly, some rules and methods are proposed in translating such materials into English.
