Set-phrases, parallel to idioms, proverbs and allegorical sayings, form a significant part of Modern Chineses vocabulary. They reflect the unique social life, customs, history and culture of Chinese people with their local ethos such as being short and pithy, vivid, including and implicit. The use of set–phrases is a very common linguistic phenomenon shared by Chineses people in oral communication. However, owing to their uniqueness, they are one of the most difficult problems for foreign learners to cope with in Chinese learning. Therefore, set-phrases teaching has its significance and necessity in Teaching Chinese as foreign Language (TCFL).This paper takes a tentative approach to Modern Chinese set-phrases with their basis as the starting point of research. Based on the previous studies made by other researchers, by analyzing the corpus from diachronic perspective, this paper raises four types of basis, namely rhetoric coinage, meanings, historical allusions and connotations. There seems to be one tendency in the field of Teaching Chinese as foreign Language TCFL, that is, all types of object researches of Modern Chinese are directed to the practices of Teaching Chinese as Foreign Language, and the results of researches are supposed to be tyransformed into approaches towards Teaching Chinese as Foreign Language. Out of the similar purpose, this paper is supposed to shed some light to this practise from the study of the basis of modern Chinese set-phrases.
