| Films and TV series,as an important communication method ,play a pivotal role in cultural exchanges among many countries.Since the reform and opening-up,more and more English films and TV series have been introduced to China.They not only entertain Chinese people but also promote cultural exchanges.Thus how to successfully translate English films and TV series should be drawn attention to.Audiovisual programs are a popular art and their value can't be separated from the audiences'appreciation,so translators must consider the target audiences'subjective requirements and acceptance. Films and TV series ,as a cultural carrier,belong to a part of culture.Thus audiovisual translation in essence is cultural translation.It is to build a bridge between different cultures and its purpose is to introduce one culture to another culture.The principles of cultural translation and audiovisual translation in essence are to achieve cultural functional equivalence and cross-cultural communication. Audiovisual translators'responsibility is to resolve the conflicts between different culturesIn view of the characteristics and nature of E-C audiovisual translation,the author attempts to study E-C audiovisual translation from cultural translation view put forth by Susan Bassnett and tentatively studies some cultural elements.Cultural translation view emphasizes the target audiences should be centered on and argues that translators should make positive use of their creativity to achieve the maximum cultural functional equivalence between the source language and the target language.Thus the target and source audiences can get the equivalence of their psychological acceptance and reaction .Under the guidance of cultural translation view, the thesis takes domestication and foreignization as effective translation strategies in E-C audiovisual translation. However,domestication and foreignization in E-C audiovisual translation are not mutually exclusive but complementary to each other.The key question is when and under what circumstances which is primary and which is supplementary.The author thinks the standards of judgement are the Chinese audiences'knowledge backgrounds and expectations.The thesis discusses domestication and foreignization are applied in E-C audiovisual translation practice with some specific examples.In dubbing domestication should be adopted as the primary translation strategy and foreignization as the supplementary translation strategy.In subtitling foreignization should be adopted as the primary translation strategy and domestication as the supplementary translation strategy.In translating titles of English films and TV series, some titles are translated with domestication,some with foreignization and the others with their combination.In translating some cultural elements,foreignization is adopted to translate religious culture,and domestication is adopted to translate cultural images ,cultural humor and puns.The thesis emphasizes in E-C audiovisual translation translators should pay attention to the Chinese audiences'acceptance and make positive use of their creativity to achieve the maximum cultural functional equivalence between Chinese and English. This makes the Chinese audiences get the same or similar feeling as the English ones,which can truly transmit English cultural information and reach the aim of culture exchanges. |
