The chiaroscuro caused by light radiation is one of the basic element in realistic paintings. From the Renaissance, many artists began to analysis and simulate the principle of the occurrence and variation of naturally light illustration with scientific attitude, and finally find the way to reproduce the objective reality which is based on visual psychological effect of light. Through the exploration of light, it's not only to make the skills which reproduce the natural reality tends to perfect, but also made more possibility for artists to design the painting space, color and layout. And makes an evident efforts to the development and evolution of painting language. Most of contemporary Western artists who adhere to the realistic painting are converted the traditional lighting language that gives light and shade an obvious form and symbolic, learned and strengthen the principle of plane form between black and white, by this way they found the conjunction between Modern and Tradition, Realism and Abstractionism, and makes realistic painting to move forward in contemporary cultural contexts.In modern China realistic oil paintings is showing a colorful landscape and continues to maintain a sound momentum of development, and the light and shad as a basic language of realistic painting, showed various form between different artists'works in contemporary Chinese cultural contexts. Overall, in Chinese contemporary, we had learned from westen country about the lighting language of realistic oil paintings for a long time, before we begun to make an independent exploration which based on local cultural situation with high consciousness, that makes the lighting language of realistic oil paintings in contemporary China has been preliminarily has its own unique characteristics and tendencies. This paper elucidated the aesthetic implication of lighting language in oil painting as an original element; review the development of light language in Western realistic painting and the usage of light in contemporary Chinese realistic painting. According to the painting development history clues of using the lighting language and examples including the typical painters and their works in their period; and the unique characteristics of contemporary Chinese realistic oil painting by using lighting language, enabling us to realize the significant effort of the light and shadow in modern realistic painting.
