This paper studies the architecture in traditional Chinese landscape paintings between Northern Song Dynasty and Southern Song Dynasty, which was a period when landscape paintings made its emphatic mark in the history of Chinese painting. Absorbing the heritage of Tang Dynasty, architecture between Northern Song Dynasty and Southern Song Dynasty was more mature and richer, which had led to the production of books on architecture such as Construction Method. Thanks to promotion and favor of culture and arts by the rulers, landscape paintings reached a peak between Northern Song Dynasty and Southern Song Dynasty. At the same time, requirements for paintings had become more strict as painters needed to express abstruse artistic conception as well as present a truthful portrait. Therefore, objects in landscape paintings at this time were more idiographic, which provides a good reference for architecture study nowadays. Currently study on landscape and architecture tends to distinguish the paintings and the architectures in the paintings so that they are studied separately. Only Mr. Fu Xinian and Mr. Xiao Mo engaged in pioneering research on construction depicted in the Song Dynasties paintings, but their efforts mostly focused on building construction and only briefly touch upon plane shapes, but no system was formed to study architecture using paintings as media.Begin with landscape paintings of the Song Dynasty, the author attempts to study architectures and even expand the scope of study. Based on what has been accomplished by others, the author will not only look at building construction and plane shapes but also the impact exerted by scholars on the landscape culture and site testing for construction in a painting from a cultural perspective. The author would study the relationship between architecture and site in landscape paintings in detail and how architectures accommodate different environments. Study on space layout in landscape paintings includes creation of boot space, various types of plane shapes and the derivation of flat space for official residence. The author will also briefly discuss the relationship between landscape and gardening and analyze their similarities as well as inspiration gained from landscape paintings.Through research on architecture in landscape paintings between Northern Song Dynasty and Southern Song Dynasty, the author tries to provide advice to study on architectures in landscape painting from the Song Dynasty and the protection and regeneration of ancient buildings, especially those from the Song Dynasty.
