Translation Violence:a Cultural Critical Analysis Of The English Version Of Fortress Besieged

Fortress Besieged has attached great importance to many scholars at home and abroad. The book Fortress Besieged translated by Jeanne Kelly and Nathan K. Mao has exerted great influence on the western literary and artistic world for a long time. Furthermore, this book is spoken highly of by many western readers. Many western scholars hold that the English version of Fortress Besieged adapts to western readers and western culture. However, it is found that the English version of Fortress Besieged is adaptation or violence through careful reading of this book by the author. Thus, it is worth considering whether it is adaptation or violence.Several aspects have been discussed in this thesis: first, the authoress puts forward the viewpoints after analyzing the previous comments of the English version of Fortress Besieged, that is, translation is domesticating violence. This part will carry out its research from two levels: language and culture, and the quantitative research on the English translation of Fortress Besieged under the theoretical framework of Berman's Concept Translation Theory and Venuti's Ethics of Difference in this thesis. And clearly points out the reasons why domesticating violence is not adopted in transmitting an alien culture to the target language readers. At last,based on China's own national situation, the thesis points out the authoress's expected predication purpose by against domesticating violence: Cultural Ecology in the Context of Cultural Globalization, which will be summarized from the perspective of culture Nationality, Cultural Heritage and Cultural Compatibility.The key problems to be solved of this thesis are as follows: First, the English version Fortress Besieged is cultural adaptation. The present study shows that violence exist in the English version of Fortress Besieged, but violence is relative, that is, some places where violence can be avoided have been violenced. Second, Violence is embodied from the linguistic and the cultural levels though the analysis of the English version of Fortress Besieged. Third, the Cultural Criticism on the English Version of Fortress Besieged should be discussed. Therefore, some detailed reasons are given on the basis of the analysis. Finally,the significance of resisting domesticating violence. Resisting domesticating violence is the essence to keep balance of cultural ecology with the aim of introducing Chinese culture to target readers. This way, it will undoubtedly protect the diversity of world cultures and make China better known to the outside world in the process of economic and cultural globalization nowadays.
