Chinese-American female writer Amy Tan's first novel The Joy Luck Club is mainly about the misunderstanding and conflicts between four mothers and daughters because of the differences between two cultures and national identity. At last they understood each other. The novel explores the issues on the reconstruction of the dual-cultural identity of the Chinese-American female, expressing the author's best wishes on the equal cross-cultural communication and co-existence between China and the United States. From the postcolonial perspective and the perspective of East-West communication, this thesis exposes the forming of stereotypes and the effect on Chinese American's life and literature, emphasizing on the efforts she had made in breaking the distorted stereotypes and the reconstruction of the Chinese female images. On the other side, the novel also has its own limitation. The process of the reconstruction is also the process of the self-thought of Amy Tan:how to walk out of the dilemma and constructs the co-existing of two-culture. Amy Tan expresses her ideal prospect about culture emulsion by making use of the mother-daughter relationship. The success of The Joy Luck Club will be the model of our exploring the way to co-exist between the Oriental and Western culture.
