With the purpose of unveiling the concealed ideology and power relations in disaster news discourse, the thesis made a tentative analysis of totally thirty pieces of news covering six types of natural disasters which have been encountered in recent years. The thesis approaches those news reports from Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) perspective of by adopting Fairclough's three-dimension theory and Halliday's Systemic Functional Grammar (SFG) as theoretical and analytical foundations respectively.Since its birth in the 1970s, CDA has drawn more and more attention and has been widely used, especially in media discourse analysis. A review of previous research indicates that politics and economics top the list of topics selected by critical discourse analysts, and disaster news, as an important news discourse type, draws little attention. Therefore the study is proposed in the hope of filling the gap.The thesis starts with the literature review of relevant studies both at home and abroad. The second chapter is the introduction of theoretical and analytical framework, based on which a pilot study is conducted. In the third chapter, a comprehensive and in-depth case study of thirty disaster news reports selected from The New York Times is carried out from three aspects, i.e. transitivity and modality (under ideational and interpersonal functions respectively), as well as reporting forms. The thesis concludes with the research findings, discussion of implications and suggestions for further study in other fields such as translation. At last, it is hoped that the proposed study can raise readers'awareness of hidden ideology. In addition, the critical comprehension could be conducive to the teaching of English news discourse and the translating of news coverage.
