On English classes, English course book is one of the most important parts for constructing English teaching and plays an essential role in whether accomplishing the teaching content or achieving teaching objectives. Its significance should be emphasized in English teaching, for Chinese college students still greatly rely on course books both in and out of the classroom. Therefore, a correct material evaluation is of great importance for choosing a kind of reasonable course book. Three Year College English Curriculum Requirements was issued by Education Ministry in the year of 2000,in which students'real language ability was the aim and the practicability and pertinence of the teaching content were highlighted. A variety of course books are compiled and published in the market which are claimed to be in line with Requirements. New Practical English—Comprehensive Course which was published by Higher Education Publishing Company is being used by the freshmen in Inner Mongolian Wuhai Vocational and Technical College. This study has conducted an evaluation of New Practical English—Comprehensive Course ,an English course book series used by the first year learners (they have finished learning the course books ) ,with the aim of knowing the extent to which this course book can meet the needs of freshmen. The thesis attempts at evaluating New Practical English—Comprehensive Course (Volume 1 and 2) systematically and completely based on the relevant evaluation theories both from abroad and at home and statistics software analysis of the SPSS 13.0.There is a review of relevant theories about evaluation of teaching materials and present situations of the research. The results show that there is a shortage of evaluation of teaching materials learnt at vocational high schools from learners' perspectives .Based on evaluation theories, the questionnaire is designed for the learners. Then, an interview is done to act as the supplement of the questionnaire. The questionnaire includes three parts: the first part contains some basic questions about the learners themselves, like how many years these learners learn English and what their marks of the College Entrance Examination are; the second part is about the learners'opinions towards the course book from both micro and macro points of view; the third part is about the learners'knowledge grasp and skill improvement of each kind after learning the course book. The interview points at the questions which are not included in the questionnaire. The aim is to evaluate the design and using situations of the teaching material from the learners' perspectives, then put forward some suggestions for modification. The result shows that the design and arrangement of New Practical English——Comprehensive Course satisfies most learners who feel helpful in grasping knowledge, improving their English skills and passing their examinations. And the corresponding exercise books and disks are useful, too. Simultaneously, however, there is a shortage of spoken material in the course book, the teaching content is a little too much, and some necessary content about English culture should be added, and there is a shortage of difficult points and key points in the teacher's Book.Lastly, some suggestions are put forward based on the significant findings of the survey. The significance of the thesis is that the evaluation has been done by another important user of course book—learners. From the subject of evaluation, learners of different English levels are studied. The result of the evaluation of New Practical English—Comprehensive Course may be of some help in judging and determining the appropriateness of using the course book in the local area, and the author offers some suggestions for further improvement of the course book.
