George Orwell, as one of the most important writers in the 20th century, attracts the world's attention even more. Regarded as George Orwell's autobiographical works, Homage to Catalonia is a factual record of the Spanish Civil War. It is a turning point in his literary career. Meanwhile, it could help people to understand George Orwell's works deeply. This thesis explores the significance of the Spanish Civil Warfor George Orwell from the perspective of recovering the truth in the history. On the basis of Homage to Catalonia, it interprets the truth from many aspects. The first chapter reveals why Orwell went to Spanish and joined the army, and analyzes his responsibility as a writer and his objective writing style. The second chapter interprets Orwell's writing style of humor, satire as well as his aims of writing. Then, concentrating on his mercy and morality, the third chapter explores Orwell's humanity conveyed in his Homage to Catalonia. The fourth chapter discusses Orwell's thought of anti-utopian, which is the primary character of his works, and reveals his ideal of democratic socialism in this novel. Finally, the last chapter, on the one hand, explores the relationship between Homage to Catalonia and Nineteen Eighty-Four, Animal Farm on the theory of intertextuality. On the other hand, the chapter focuses on the original thought of Orwell's anti-totalitarianism. Personally speaking, I hope this thesis could be helpful for exploring the style of George Orwell's works anyway, by means of interpreting the truth of Homage to Catalonia comprehensively.
