The Six Dynasties period is the critical period in which Chiangnan (regions south of the Yangtze River) transforms from the territorial concept to the cultural concept. With the southward migration of the mainstream the culture of the Central Plains, the regional aesthetics of Chiangnan is discovered and a large number of the local beauties of Chiangnan have also come into the poetry, which helps form the imagoes that are characteristic of Chiangnan. The formation and construction of the imago are the two theoretical fulcrums and basic factors of the aesthetic imago of poetry. There are mainly 4 ways to form the imagoes of Chiangnan in the Six Dynasties. First, the symbolization of the local beauties. Since Chiangnan is on the fringe of the culture of the Central Plains, the aesthetics of its local elements is not displayed fully. Only when the mainstream culture of the Central Plains during the Six Dynasties migrates southward on a large scale do these local elements become the subjects of the poetry and are they symbolized. Secondly, the regional consciousness. The migration of the population and the opponency of the regimes incur a strong regional consciousness that strengthens the region's aesthetic function. In this way, the territorial concept of Chiangnan is symbolized and becomes the poetic regional culture space. Thirdly, the spacial movement. The construction of the imagoes of Chiangnan by the litterateurs who have spacial movement, especially those who come to the north, is also an important way to form the imagoes of Chiangnan. Fourthly, the theory of "thing and sentiment" and the symbolization of images. The formation of imagoes is also related to the traditional concept of the poetry. The theory of "thing and sentiment" and the poetry composition under its influence play an important role in the formation of the imagoes of Chiangnan. The constructional relations of the imagoes of Chiangnan during the Six Dynasties include rhetorical relations and combinational relations of verbal icons. The imagoes of Chiangnan in the Six Dynasties have distinctly regional style and are deeply influenced by the Chu culture.Because the Wu and West Melody characteristic of Chiangnan is flourishing in the cities in the Six Dynasties and more population of southward migration reside in or near the cities, the imagoes in poetry also manifest the city culture in various degrees.
