This study aimed to explore the transitivity features of English and Chinese informative speeches through identifing the process types of them on the theory of transitivity from Halliday's point of view, and on this basis tried to find the similarities and differences in the use of each process type between English and Chinese informative speeches through qualitative analysis and comparative analysis. In this thesis, the author attempts to find answers to these questions:1.What types of processes are employed in English and Chinese informative speeches respectively? 2.What are the transitivity features in them respectively? 3.Are there any significant differences in the use of each type of processes between English and Chinese informative speeches?Through the qualitative analysis and statistical calculation of transitivity in the 120 samples (60 in English and 60 in Chinese), it found that not all of these speeches use 6 types of processes. But all these informative speeches make use of the three major processes-material, relational and mental processes. English samples tend to use more types of processes than Chinese ones. The transitivity features of English and Chinese informative speeches are similar. Three types of transitivity processes make up the majority:material, relational and mental processes. They all rarely use behavioral processes. And English samples tend to use verbal processes more frequently. Through this analysis, the speakers'intention is explored clearly, the field of this kind of speeches can be deduced, and the hidden ideology of them can be revealed. Although the general process distribution of English and Chinese informative speeches are similar, from the results of SPSS,in the use of material, mental, behavioral and verbal processes, the differences between English informative speeches and Chinese ones are significant. While in the uses of relational and existential processes, no significant differences exist between English and Chinese informative speeches.
