Hou Hsiao-hsien to produces his movies in "Re-plantation of existence"—is the reality of being imitated, which is the same to the real reality and essential reality, and which can exist independently. This truth is presented through the routine, which knock out the dramatic plot and the "dreams" traces of the Western image.Hou Hsiao-hsien's film gradually moves away from Western realistic Image style, represented by Andre Bazin. He found his "oriental" type of expression and narrative approach as well as conversion to traditional Chinese aesthetics and the traditional philosophy. The using of the long shots and depth of field skill is the director's the pursuit for "Oriental View of Space and Time" and the "wide and distant" aesthetics of the Chinese Painting and Calligraphy. Poetic scenery in his films abides by the philosophy of Taoism "the reunification of material world and their own","harmony between man and nature".Hou Hsiao-hsien under the cross-strait political context:"the loss of a father" and "the loss of hometown".Because of the unique geo-political relations between Taiwan and mainland China, Hou Hsiao-hsien has been standing in a common perspective of individual life to narrate Taiwan's history. In his films, the most common "the loss of a parent" and "the loss of hometown" theme is the searching for individual identity and National property of several generations of Taiwanese people---confused and bewildered. In the context of Taiwan "de-sanitizations", the director preserved to confer the unique traditional culture characteristics upon his films.
