Translatability Of Style From The Perspective Of Functional Equivalence

The translation of style has been a particularly controversial topic for a long time, and the focus of this topic is usually on the translatability of style. What is on earth the translation of style? Is style translatable? These questions are really worth discussing. If we recognize that style can not be translated, it means we recognize that we are unable to redisplay the writing spirit of great men of letters, past and present, foreign and domestic, to the reader of other cultures, which is not what many translators want to see. However, if style can be translated, how can we realize it in the process of translation?This thesis tries to analyze the translation by Yang Xianyi and Gladys Yang of the book Dawn Blossoms Plucked at Dusk by Lu Xun to discuss the issue of the translatability of style from the perspective of functional equivalence. In fact, the book by Lu Xun has many unique aspects.First, it is zawen (essay) in style, different from other styles of the works by Lu Xun, such as novel, poetry, prose and so on. This style of his has not received enough deserved attention, but it does not mean it has no literary values.Second, it is written from the perspective of childhood and teenage. Since one's thought is relatively innocent and gets relatively few impacts from the outside world at such periods, the author can rather objectively reflect what he experiences during such times.Third, the author mixes his personal experiences with social realities. The author not only talks about what he experiences, but also subtly steers from such experiences to the revelation of more in-depth social problems. Sometimes, although the author just gives one or two remarks by the way, it is the effect of the author's painstaking thinking, which displays that the author has reached the perfection of literary creation. Considering the unique style of this book, we believe it is meaningful to discuss its translatability. The translation by Yang Xianyi and Gladys Yang of the book Dawn Blossoms Plucked at Dusk is also worthy of notice. Many scholars in the field of translation research tend to focus on the translations by Yang Xianyi and Gladys Yang of some great works, such as A Dream of a Red Mansions, Outlaws of the Marsh and so on. Of course, the charm of great works can not be matched and the research of their translations is really worthwhile. However, if we want to get a panorama of the issue of whether style, especially when it comes to a certain translator, is translatable, we have to pay attention to all styles of his translation. Obviously, the translation of the book Dawn Blossoms Plucked at Dusk has not gotten enough attention from the field of translation, maybe because the book itself is not prestigious in the field of literature. Nevertheless, as mentioned above, the book has certain special aspects in style, so its translation should be given enough attention too.Through comparative analysis, this thesis compares the original of Dawn Blossoms Plucked at Dusk and its translation from the perspective of functional equivalence to prove whether style is translatable. This thesis has cited quite a lot of examples from the original and their translated English counterparts to analyze. Through the verification of examples, the thesis concludes that style is translatable.The structure of the thesis can be divided into five parts. The first part is Introduction, the second part is Literature Review, the third part is Theoretical Framework, the fourth part is Comparative Analysis of Dawn Blossoms Plucked at Dusk and Its Translation, and the final part is Conclusion.
