Analysis On Modern Christian Indigenization In Shaanxi Province

Christian indigenization means the process of dissemination; it integrates different cultures through collision, communication and integration with different cultures. Studying Christianity's relationship with Christian indigenization in Shaanxi's from the perspective of indigenization can deeply reflect the condition of Christianity's actual assimilation, cultural integration and living. But as far as the author knows, except the scattered county records, there are few as well as systematic academic research in this aspect.In modern times, Christianity was introduced to Shaanxi province with the unequal treaties. From the subjective perspective, it met with Shaanxi local culture in certain ethnic conflicts. Objectively speaking, since two different cultures meet, they would inevitably have conflicts, and at the same time influence each other. It forms the process of cultural conflicts, communication and integration which is conscious and unconscious. According to the actual spread situation of modern Christianity in Shaanxi province, this paper analyses the conflicts of Christianity and the Shaanxi local cultures in beliefs and customs. Faced with these conflicts, missionaries made some efforts on Christian Indigenization, which mainly includes the following six points:(1) The ways to miss ionize were adjusted to the local conditions; (2) Church founded various social undertakings; (3) Chinese and Western church-style architecture was built; (4) the creation of sacred music has absorbed the essence of traditional Chinese culture.The efforts mentioned above gradually changed the public's refusal and rejection to Christianity and missionaries, so that Christianity makes a progress in Shaanxi Province and have achieved the result of Indigenization in a certain degree, teachings go deep into the life of believers and the Church embark on a path of self-sustaining development. However, the current Christianity are still in its initial stage of Indigenization, facing lots of problems, such as believers are from few classes, functions are not professional, local clergy are extremely wanted. Because of these problems, the Christianity must be compatible with the local culture of Shaanxi and socialist society. Only by doing these can we truly realize the Christian Indigenization in Shaanxi Province.
