A large number of local historical documents and live folk reflects the fact that the Prefecture of Pingyang, a middle-level administrative divisions located in southern of Shanxi in the Qing Dynasty, has rich musical culture and profound ritual traditions.In the Qing Dynasty, Pingyang local music activities mainly were included in some ceremonies, such as the religious services in the Confucian Temple and Guan Di Temple, Xiang Yin Jiu——a banquet held by local officials to entertain country gentlemen, marriage, funeral ceremony, temple festivals and so on. Its can be divided into to two categories:one was official ceremony which has been represented by the religious services in the Confucian Temple, and another was folk custom ceremony which has been represented by funeral ceremonies. The forms of musical activities are mainly dance music, Drum & wind music, Shengge music, drama and others. In the tuning system, modes, score, instruments, performances, and many other aspects of morphology, the official ceremony music and folk customs ceremony music presents a sharp confrontation, but also a high degree of integration of morphological characteristics.Pingyang local music culture in the Qing Dynasty is rooted in the co-activation of the intrinsic factors that were the local people's Widespread demand for musical functions and symbolic significance, and the external causes that were the socio-political, economic and cultural system at that time.Its many representations opposing integration of music not only reflects the confrontation and balances between the different social forces, but also reveals the local music culture within the "binary" and "triadic" co-existence of deep structure. Study of the internal mechanism of Pingyang local music culture of the Qing Dynasty will help to explore the fundamental relation between traditional society and musical cultural, and to provide new ideas for the moment research and protection of traditional folk music.
