The two cities, Changde and Jishou, are located in the northwest of Hunan province. The dialects of the two cities belong to the southwest mandarin. Up to now, researches on these two dialects are mainly based on traditional methods of using ear to record. In order to study the tone of a Chinese character, this thesis will carry out an experimental study by using the modem phonetics research methodThis thesis is divided into four parts.Part 1 briefly introduce the contents as follows:the study contents as well as the study meaning;the selection of experiment methods and the materials as well as the process of experiment;the documents are related to the study of dialect of Changde and Jishou cities;and the language family of the two cities.Part 2 is mainly to discuss the experimental results of dialect tone of Changde city, and then it is compared with the traditional record. We find that, except for slight difference, the results which are obtained by using experimental method nearly show no difference from the ones obtain by traditional methods. The experimental value Yangping is 23.In the experimental process there is a "onvex" form appeared after the half of the part of Yangping. Through the experiment we can understand the relationship of the duration of the four tones is:Qusheng35> Yangping23>Yingping55> Shangsheng21.Part 3 is mainly to discuss the experimental results of dialect tone of Jishou city, and then it is compared with traditional record. Our conclusion is that results obtained by experimental method shows great difference with the traditional results. Yangping is a rising tone contours 34, which is obtained by experimental method, while the traditional value is a high level 55. There are also much difference in Yangping, whose experimental value is 31 and traditional value is 11,a lower level. By experimental method we find that Qusheng is a tortuous tone and nearly half of all the duration stay in the lowest rung, and its traditional value is a rising tone35. Through the research on Jishou dialect we find the relationship of the duration of the four tone is:Qusheng213>Yingping34> Yangping31> Shangsheng54.Part 4 is a conclusion, which analyse roughly the reasons why the coincident degree between the experimental results of dialect tone of Changde city and the traditional record is more than that of Jishou city...
