A Comparative Study Of The Characters From Louis Cha And Scott

This thesis is a comparative study on the characters in Louis Cha's and Scott's novels, attempting to interpret the cultural connotation and effects held in the male and female positive characters and negative characters. In spite of the fact that they lived in various times and their writings are characterized by separate social environments and different cultural backgrounds, Louis Cha and Scott composed masterpieces of the knight errand literature and created some typical characters under the backgrounds of Chinese culture and western culture.The author comparatively studies the characters in Louis Cha's and Scott's novels through text structure analysis. The body of this thesis is constituted by three parts. The first part is a comparative analysis of personality traits and effects of the male characters in their novels, in which the author believes that characters under different cultural backgrounds have distinct personality traits and mental developments and surely have the features of their eras, because the writers were affected by different cultures and religions. In the second part, the author comparatively analyzes the personality traits and effects of female characters in their novels, and presents women's concepts of love and values in different cultures. As a result, the female, as an indispensable image in literature, eventually has a unique effect. The third part is a comparative study of cultural connotations held in negative characters in their novels, unfolding the defects and true personality traits of characters. Through the comparative study of negative characters in Chinese culture and western culture, the author explores the commons and differences of their destinies, and discusses the roles played by negative characters in novels.
