A Study Of Cross-domain Application Of Medical Terms

We choose the terms we need from《The Dictionary of Modern Chinese》and《The Functional Dictionary of Medical Terms》. We get the terms about cross-domain application of these terms using corpus, different publications and Internet. We describe the types of and laws of cross-domain application of these terms in modern Chinese by analyzing the terms to reveal the laws of development of the cross-domain application of medical terms. And we also study the effects and the reasons of Cross-domain application of medical terms.The survey shows there are more and more medical terms being used in other domains. The applied range of medical terms is so large that it concerns many aspects of social life. They can be divided into stable cross-domain and temporary cross-domain according to the degree of their stability. Cross-domain application of medical terms is a kind of proceed in an orderly way and step by step. There are three effects of the cross-domain application. The first one is the changing of the terms'conceptual and rhetorical meaning. The second one is the enhancement of compounding ability of the terms. The last one is unique rhetorical effect appears and at the same time a kind of neologism in medical terms is produced. Cross-domain application of medical terms has its outer social reasons and inner linguistic reasons.
