The Humanity Exploration In Wangshuo's Novels

Generally, the common view finds out that the shortage of Wangshuo's novels is the instant-culture-nature, and they are believed to be extremely destructive. The Anti-Intelligence writing policy of Wangshuo and the resources of culture spirit, including the intelligentsia culture, have become a destructive power. On one hand, the belles-lettres group looks down upon Wangshuo's works. On the other hand, His novels are very popular in the market. And this is the contradiction we have to face in literature history.The thesis of this dissertation is that there's much special value in the description of humanity in Wangshuo's novels. There are mainly two aspects in the probing of humanity of the novels, one of which is the taunt to the pseudo-ism and it has been expanded to become a rebellion of all human's depressive nature, which can genuinely represents Wangshuo's thoughts. And the other aspect shows an objection to hypocritical personality, which aimed at the intelligentsia and uncovered all the ugliness in human's nature. Irony and realistic writing are the two methods used in Wangshuo's works when dealing with the above issues and the results are highly visible. These novels reflect the changes of people during the changes of society and the changes of the relationship between Chinese people and their society, which is added by the writer's unique thoughts on humanity and indicates the unchanged aspects of our national character.The first part of this dissertation inspects some recent misunderstanding of Wangshuo's works, mainly from a critical view. Wangshuo has been criticized to be kitsch and his early works were thought to be mass literature. But there's a problem to be defecate: Wangshuo was innocent and criticize just came to him from nowhere. They called him ruffian, yet the writer didn't want to be so-called moral at the very beginning. The real seriousness in his works seems to be invaluable given the"ruffian"judgement.For one thing, the popular writing shouldn't be negated. For another, the"I'm just a ruffian"and the"no one scares me"attitude of Wangshuo is a powerful counterstroke to the critical circles.The second part of this dissertation mainly discussed the revolt to oppression in the exploration of humanity.This paper believes that the meaning in Wangshuo's novels is worth something. The depth and sensitivity showed in the exploration of humanity is very positive, which indicates the depth of Wangshuo's observing and understanding of life, and his ideological content can be very illuminating and of identity. This dissertation agrees on Moro's approbation to Wangshuo in his Comedy Attitude and Tragedy Spirit:"Wangshuo's works are actually like this. They are popular with the readers, but the literary circle considered them as ruffian literature. I hold the view that Wangshuo has actually experienced a lot of misery and he couldn't face it like others, but to show a cynical attitude, which is the reason of the ruffian literature. I think that's valuable."Wangshuo expressed a thorough insight writhing about common life and the suffering of human's gloomy existence. What has become the realistic background of Wangshuo's ridiculing of idealism is rooted on the special social phase between 1980s and 1990s, when the main task of culture is to break the oppression of the old cultural system. Therefore, Whangshuo's method is to locate the protagonists'characters on an extreme blasphemy ideal. The nature of idealism was less and less lovable. Wangshuo sneered: the time of"For the people"had come to an end; now had come the age of"For oneself and for money"and he emphasized human's rights should get respect.As for the rebellion to authority and oppression, the means of artistic expression being used in Wangshuo's novels is irony, which is an advanced and predominant way of speaking. How to achieve the effects of irony?——The Context Pressure. According to the Krilium Brooks'explanation, some contexts showed an obvious distortion to a declarative sentence and they always hide sarcasm behind, even though the literal meaning is just the opposite of the given context.The manifestation mode of irony: First, language forms an obvious paradox literally. Second, use romantic irony and vehement declamation and then subvert all with abolishment, both of which are the two main irony method used in Wangshuo's novel. The functions of irony are: First, indirectness and implications, which can avoid the author from imposing views on readers in an assertive and direct way, instead, the writer hided his attitude and opinion behind twisted narrative and made readers understand in a more wisdom and poetic way. Second, the ironist was given sense of transcendence and pleasure. In this way, the people were relieved from the hatred and depression to the irony targets. The writer also made reading joyful and relaxing in a wisdom way.The third part of this dissertation mainly discussed the second contribution of Wangshuo's exploration of humanity, which is the realistic description in the development of personality. We can not usually see the specific construction of humanity in literature. Instead, grand narrative is more common. It's politic, society and culture that are concerned by the literature, but not the specific human's life. People have to deal with other persons and environment in their lives. The attempts made by Wangshuo and his following new realism writers just represented this tendency of concerning about the humanity, which is the improvement of literature.There are two aspects in this part. First, in the term of characters of trickery-masters, they are a group of kind-hearted who have their own principles——they are sincere, loyal, and they respect themselves and also others. They are not the real ruffians. The other aspect is indicated by the subversion to the language of intelligentsia. Wangshuo's works has drawn a picture to every group of people, whose character features hypocrite and mastering to others while they are indeed good for nothing.Wanshuo has used a more realistic method when describing human's nature, which was added by a lot of irony. This is well worth praising. The slogans-like flaunt of humanity power and the blown-up expressions of human's dreams are more popular to us, but the meticulous description is not that common. Wangshuo calls for the freedom of humanity and as a comparison, we can see, Moyan's works pay more attention on surveying feelings, and he has forgotten to structure his own understanding to the world.The meaning of realism is rooted on the social background of 1980s and 1990s. Our society is becoming more and more secular and our lives have drawn more and more attention. Someone generalized the changes of ideal and culture in China by the post-modernist ideological trend, while some others generalized Wangshuo's novels by post-modernist, both of which are reasonable. The debate on the meaning of post-modernist has never stopped and this paper believes the existence in possible. Post-modernist surely has some negative influence, yet it's not totally useless. It's often combined with the concept of modernist. The existence of the post-modernist ideological trend, its anti-authority and its individual challenge are all remarkable. Post-modernist does not only include the mass culture, but also contains the aspect of spirit culture and it is the product of human's self-development, which offered the background and meaning to Wangshuo's works.
