Lacquer coffin was the important part of funeral culture in ancient China, and the elite art of the ancestors.It has undergone thousands of years to improve and develop, and its artistic value and artistic status is clear. Because the matrix of ancient paint mostly were wooden coffin birth, and they were easily decomposed, after unearthed the complete object were less than others. During the prior Qin to Han unearthed lacquer coffin, the most important, and can represent the art level at the time was undoubtedly lacquer coffin of zeng marquis Yi tomb in Hubei Suixian leigudun and the painted coffin of Han Tomb in Changsha, Hunan. As the special geographical location and in the unique historical period of Chu, the performance of their art represented advanced level of development of lacquer within the prior Qin to Han.In this paper, author use four parts to do research with the painted coffins of the prior Qin to Han dynasty:First,research for decorative patterns of painted coffin in ChuWarring States to Han Dynasty, the unearthed coffins preserved relatively intact in Chu are lacquer coffin of zeng marquis Yi tomb in the Warring States period, lacquer coffin No.2 tomb in Bao Hill, painting coffins of No.1 Mawangdui Han Dynasty tomb, painted coffin of NO.1 tomb in shazitang, totally 8. Each has a five decorated surface, respectively, cover, left and right side, foot files, header files. The author do the drawing of those seven coffins by hand and do image analysis for those decorative patterns.Second, to study the main decorationFrom image analysising the the decorated patterns,I can see the main patterns of painted coffin of Warring States to Han in Chu:dragons, Niaowen, snakes, tiger, deer pattern, birds were patterns, mythical beasts pattern, Spirit Mountain profile, Bi lines, clouds, stripes, geometric patterns. According to the literature and relics, the author tended to do research of the origin, cultural and moral evolution of the main patterns.Third, to explore the cultural connotations of lacquer coffin patterns and ideas embodied in funeralWorship of witch and ghosts of Chu people fully embodied in the detection of lacquer coffin, its becoming immortal thought of the Han people, and its had important influence to the aesthetic sense of Han people. It makes people's minds at that time was shrouded by strong superstitious sense. Those concepts help the painted coffin form a Han dynasty decorated style having rich cultural connotation.Fourth, to conclude the resultsThrough studying of the decorative patterns of painted coffin in Chu, we can see the images depicted on the painted coffin is a magical process of becoming immortal soul of Chu people . After death,mythical beasts could drive out the devils and protect their spirits, they praying for immortal's protecting, so that to protect the deceased's body from harm.Only well-preserved body, it will not lose the soul of the dead corpses and wandering. Under guidance of dragon, phoenix, the dead could go to the paradise.It is the dream of all Chu people, and the root of such decorated patten.Han Dynasty inherited the mysterious magic, religion, superstition of Chu culture, meanwhile because Divination Taoism in the immortal thoughts and thinking, to make them even more obsessed with becoming immortal. Large number of celestial patterns on painted coffin of Mawangdui,revealed the the far-reaching influence of Liters fairy of Chu culture to Han Dynasty. The chu culture factor of Han Pained coffin,we can see the inherited relation with Warring states. Handed down from ancient witchcraft culture, fairy tales, in the Han Dynasty ,lacquer ware has been fully reflected by them.based on the Decoration style of Chu, Han lacquer decoration was more free-flowing, thin and resilient, richer colors, forming a flying mobile sly, deceitful mysterious style.
