This thesis carries a research on the espionage novels that published after 2000 from the following aspects: the text, ready sale reasons, political and historical impacts, and human nature. The thesis consists of three chapters. The first chapter, adopting"close reading", analyses the core characteristics of these novels from the two narrative elements, the secret agent and the secret maneuver. In addition, taking the works of Mai Jia for example, it investigates the preservation and innovation of espionage novels'creative modes, attaching special importance to the integration between traditional narrative mode and modern techniques. The second chapter, from the reader's horizon of expectation, expounds the reason and current status of market demand for espionage novel. Besides, by probing the packaging and promotion performed by various mass media, it provides a profound illustration to the market operation and business means that underneath the ready sale myth. Chapter three mainly concerns with the overall state of current espionage novels. Based on a comparison between domestic and oversea espionage novels and their separate origins, it not only gives a detailed interpretation to the interrelationship among espionage novels, ideology and culture, but questions the profession of spy from humane perspective. Except for summarizing the status quo of espionage novels, the conclusion part also makes tentative suggestions on espionage novel creation and development.
