Over the threshold of the Era of Information of the 21st century, as the representative of the mass media genre colony, news discourse has become the most influential type and permeated every social institution with an unprecedented breadth and depth.From the perspective of Systemic Functional Linguistic (SFL), economic review discourse is the sub-genre of news commentary discourse. It takes various forms in media, mainly in the form of special column, free-lancer articles, and the like. It gives immediate interpretation on those hot economic events or other economic phenomena, thus including important economic information. The reviewer employs various linguistic techniques to analyze and review so that to influence the public, organization even government's ideology and decision. In this sense, it belongs to a type of effective economic information, providing the audience useful perspective to survey economic hot issues.As the new development of SFL, Appraisal Theory (AT) is a new lexico-grammatical framework for studying interpersonal meaning. It is concerned with the negotiable attitude and evaluation within discourse, which provides a useful theory framework for us to explore the. interpersonal meaning. In economic review discourses, there are various rich evaluative resources and negotiatory resources that display the attitude and appraisal of the reviewer or media. Hence, we regard AT as an ideal approach to investigate economic review discourses that has not been investigated much so far.Taking the current economic phenomenon as the departure point, this thesis chooses ten economic review discourses as study materials, and attempts to employ the AT to find out the realization ways of the reviewer's appraisal meaning with both quantitative and qualitative approaches. It is hoped that this study will do good for the public to further correctly understand the appraisal value within the economic review.
