The Study On Vocabulary In Kim Dae-jung's Political Speeches

Political speech is used by people to comment on some major politica 1 events and related practical issues from a political perspective. It i s also used to indicate the standpoint, to express point of view and to advocate political views. The speaker should make his political tendency clear. Through the speeches, the speaker can make the audience understa nd his administration creed and his political views. With strong instiga tion and persuasion, the speaker can gain the audience's understanding a nd support.This paper takes Kim Dae-jung's speeches as the basis, who was the 1 5th president of South Korea. Thirty speeches have been chosen randomly from President Kim Dae-jung's Speech Corpus (5 volumes), which is publis hed by the office of presidential secretary. After systematic dealing wi th the vocabulary, some research has been done with both statistics and induction methods. By doing so, the characteristics of the vocabulary us ed in Kim Dae-jung's speeches and his political ideas have been analyze d.The thesis is composed of 4 parts.The first part is introduction. It talks about the main purpose and significance of this study. It also talks about the current research and its shortcomings. Finally it introduces the study object and the resear ch methods.The second part sums up the language characteristics in Kim Daejung' s speeches by analyzing the general words in them. According to the features of the political speeches, this thesis divide the political speeches into two types, the substantive speeches ((?) (?)) and the ritual speeches((?)). Then the two types are separ ately studied from the points of the part of speech and the origin. The part of speech includes nouns, verbs, pronouns, adjectives, adverbs, art icles, and numbers. According to the origins, the vocabulary is divided into 4 types, inhered words, Chinese words, foreign words and hybrid wor ds. Some statistical research has been done about the distribution of th e words.The third part explores the language features by studying the politi cal terms used in his speeches, according to which Kim Dae-jung's politi cal characteristics and thoughts are analyzed.The fourth part is conclusion. It makes a summary about the second a nd the third parts. In this part, the shortcomings and those that should be improved of this thesis are also pointed out.
